Jacopo agostini

Sociologist Photographer

Photography: the art of freezing time, the ability to store emotions and feelings in a frame, the way to capture a moment and tell its story.

About ME

Born in 1994 in Este, a small town at the foot of the Euganean Hills

He became interested in sociology after completing a three-year degree at the University of Padua and a double master's degree at the EHESS in Paris and the HSE in Moscow. During one of his many trips to South-East Asia, he discovered a passion for photography. Particularly for the countless expressions, physiognomies and faces he encountered in the streets. He was able to capture every view and instant of life, age and social class. He discovered photography as a key and object of understanding.

This is research studies in fact being ethnographies and participant observations of social movements and indigenous people in conflict situations. In addition, there is a passion - later to become a project - that he has pursued since his adolescence: urban exploration, or urbex. He explores structures forged by the hand of man, often abandoned, in ruins, forgotten or made off-limits, from the Sahara desert to the Far East.

The photography of abandoned places, within a spatial and temporal dimension that is detached from the rest of society, is written and subsequently rewritten through his documentation. The  skills acquired through his studies and research have developed sensitivity and an eye for details and faces. He currently collaborates for the pages of the newspaper "il manifesto" and “Arte e Dossier”.

Weakness as a measure of greatness

Whoever appears in front of a camera wants to bring his or her best side, even if that is not always what photographers are looking for.

Whoever searches for the essence and intimacy of an individual must have the ability to see beyond, to be able to read the human soul and break through its masks.

Photography is about observing, communicating and interacting. In a photo there is never only the subject, but also the photographer. What creates photography is an exchange of energy between the photographer and the person in front of the lens. And if you look deeply, at every photo next to the subject you can also find the photographer.

In his albums, Jacopo exhibits various themes, ranging from aesthetics to humour and sentiment, but also talks about politics and social issues. The focus of his work is people, with more than 150 photos in the album 'A suitcase of fireflies', and as many in 'My Asia' and 'Documentary Photography'. In these three albums, Jacopo focuses on the aesthetics and beauty of each individual's physiognomy.

In 'Street Photography' he captures the street moment that makes that moment unique and unrepeatable. "Shadows of us" portrays people often from behind, hidden and in shadow. A shadow that follows everyone from birth to the grave. "Needle & Thread" tells of scars and small details of man. "Industrial" and "A Window in a Vacuum", on the other hand, focus on the built and natural worlds respectively.
